To The Centennial High School Community:

I would like to welcome all of you to Centennial High School, home of the Eagles, named once again as one of the most successful public comprehensive high schools in the state of Oregon. I am honored to serve in my third year as your principal, and welcome you to the 2012-2013 school year. I am looking forward to serving you; the staff, students, and the community for many more years to come by helping to continue the tremendous academic growth that is occurring at Centennial High School. In 2012, the state of Oregon was granted a waiver to ESEA and No Child Left Behind.  Under this waiver, the measurement of our school performance is radically different.  Not to worry!  Although the measurements are different, the results are not! If you remember last year under the old system, 89% of our students entering their senior year had met the language arts standard and 84% had met the math standard, representing a cumulative gain of 78 percentage points in six years.  This year under the new system, Centennial High School was given an overall rating score of 4 out of 5, which is considered strong.   The new system consists of 2 areas: academics and graduation, which are weighted equally at 50%.   Academically, Centennial High School was rated at the highest level (5) in ALL areas of academic measurement.  WOW.  That places our our school among the top 10% of ALL high schools in the state of Oregon.
Not only does
Centennial High School excel academically, we offer your student the opportunity to participate in a number of extra-curricular opportunities. We offer experiences in the arts through our band, color guard, choir and drama programs.  You can practice your public speaking on our forensics team, build and race your electric car with our Electric Car club, become a school leader in the Associated Student Body (ASB), write a gripping story to be published in our student-run newspaper The Talon, collaborate and celebrate cultural diversity at our MECHA club meetings, or become a future business tycoon through participation in our state and nationally recognized FBLA program. Whatever it is that helps connect you to your high school experience, you can find it here at Centennial High SchoolIf athletics are your interest, then Centennial High School offers collectively one of the most successful programs in Oregon at the 6A level.  Last year many of our teams participated or had participants in the OSAA state playoffs. Congratulations to all our Eagle athletes!

I invite you to take part in celebrating the success of
Centennial High School by being an active participant in the educational experience that we offer to each and every one of our students. I invite you to join us in continuing to make Centennial High School one of the most successful comprehensive high schools in Multinomah County and the state of Oregon. I hope that you chose to be a part of the supportive culture of excellence here at Centennial High School, and if you do, remember to wear your "EAGLE" gear on Friday!

Personally, I would like to thank the students, teachers, staff, district, community and my family for your support.  I am extremely proud, honored and even more so humbled, to represent all of you as the 2012 MetLife-NASSP Oregon High School Principal of the Year.  Thank you so very much for your consideration and confidence.  It is a testament to the strength and excellence of our entire school district and community.

With Pride, Respect, and Responsibility,

Kevin Ricker, Ed.S.
